Legal Assistant (Pittsburgh)

The Legal Assistant position provides crucial support to the Pittsburgh office through processing intake mail and assisting with maintaining client communications. 

PILP is based out of three offices located in Philadelphia, Lewisburg, and Pittsburgh. This position is for the Pittsburgh office. While PILP staff are currently working on a hybrid schedule, this position will require a regular presence in the Pittsburgh office. This position is for 10-15 hours per week. This position will be paid an hourly wage commensurate with experience but at a minimum of $15 per hour. 

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Sorting, scanning, and filing letters from incarcerated people. 

  • Responding to requests for legal assistance and informational resource requests. 

  • Printing, copying, and sending correspondence through prison mail systems. 

  • Maintaining client files on Sharepoint and the LegalServer case management system. 

  • Answering calls from incarcerated individuals and their families. 

  • Should the successful candidate be interested, additional responsibilities may include assisting with community outreach, development, and fundraising work, and working on other special projects. 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Strong technological skills and computer literacy, and the ability to learn new technology and systems. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Word and Excel. 

  • Excellent organizational skills. 

  • Ability to work independently to complete designated tasks without strict oversight. 

  • Proficiency in the Spanish language is a plus and will be given additional consideration. 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Commitment to public interest work and the role of PILP in safeguarding the rights of incarcerated and institutionalized people. 

  • PILP requires all staff to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
