Lawyers from the Pennsylvania Institutional Law Project have announced that they won a court order that protects the right of people incarcerated in the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (DOC) to have religiously appropriate food for religious holidays and celebrations.
The case was brought by a Muslim man incarcerated at SCI Albion, who wanted to be able to buy food for Eid-al-adha in the same manner he and other Muslims have done for decades, allowing him to properly observe this meaningful and important religious holiday.
The court’s ruling ordered that the DOC return to its prior policy, allowing the purchase of halal meats and other traditional food for this holiday at SCI Albion.
